Salvation Mountain - A Story Of Love

Salvation Mountain is an incredible place, and we say that not only because of how it looks, but also because of the story behind it.

The site has become so popular in recent years that you probably have unintentionally seen photos of it at some point on the Internet. Like many, we were originally attracted by its one of a kind design and the charming colors. But as we decided to visit this place we did some quick research about it, only to find out that the story of this place is simply powerful and touching. With that in mind, and even after seeing plenty of photos online, being here physically and seeing the mountain in person gave us another level of appreciation and respect.

Parking was abundant while we visited, during busy times there were ample street parking available as well. The site isn’t large, you’ll have the option to climb to the very top of the mountain if desired, you can also walk through from underneath of the structure that is also pleasantly painted.

The mountain was literally hand built and painted by the great local artist Leonard Knight in a span of 28 years. Residing in the California Desert area, it is not the most ideal environment to be working outdoor. We stopped here for around 30 minutes in the winter season, had plenty of sunscreen on, and yet we still felt the burn from the direct sunlight after a short while being exposed to it. Imagine almost three decades of hard work from Leonard to bring this mountain to life, and all for one reason: God is Love.

The story of Leonard Knight has drawn many volunteers to help maintain the site, as well as paint donations.
