Olympic Peninsula
The slide area at 2 miles in

The trail was in pretty good shape with respect to blowdowns across the trail. It looked like a trail maintenance crew cleared many large blowdowns with a chainsaw. There are still a few smaller blowdowns but they are easy to get around or under.

The section of the trail affected by the landslide at 2 miles in from the TH is still an area that deserves caution when you cross it. There is a "goat path" about 12 inches wide to get across. I would avoid this area if it was raining or soggy because this goat path would be very soft and could collapse. This slide area is very visible from the south shore of the lake.

For us, the main annoyance was the swarming bugs at the summit by the shack. I was happy to have a hat and a buff to cover my face and ears. The bugs weren't so bad if you kept moving along the ridge line. But if you stop for very long, they would find you.

Despite the bugs, we enjoyed the hike very much. The forest was beautiful and the intermittent views of the lake on a sunny day gave us big smiles. This was a great alternative to Storm King on the other side of the lake.

View from the summit, east toward Lake Sutherland. Mt Baker on the horizon.
