It was in 2014 that The Andy Warhol Foundation donated the entirety of the artist's archives to the Cantor Arts Center at the University of Stanford. 130,000 negatives and 3,600 contact sheets were digitalized and catalogued, inspiring Michael Dayton Hermann to pull a number of works from the collection to compile this new, original oeuvre. Conceived as a collaborative venture between the foundation (for which he is the Director of Licencing), and Jean Michel Basquiat's estate, hundreds of photographs have been collated in this beautiful tome, some of which have never before been published. The book chronicles the complex relationship between two personalities that both individually and collectively, shook New York's artistic landscape, with a particular focus on the period from 1982 to 1987, narrated by extracts from Andy Warhol's famous journals. The intimate ties between the two artists are given the spotlight, represented in the works they created together and Warhol's daily musings: "Jean Michel was at the office. He brought his lunch and he was on the floor painting and not talking much. I think he stays up all night and so that was his bedtime," he writes. Basquiat's meteoric rise to fame, his ties with Keith Haring, his drug addiction and his realtionship with Paige Powell are traced through the eyes of an at once candid and almost fatherly Andy Warhol. His writings show both his respect for Basquiat as an artist, and his fear for him as a friend.
