After almost 20 years in the film industry, Elle and Dakota Fanning are set to follow in the footsteps of the Olsens, the Gyllenhaals, the Afflecks and the Wilsons and star on-screen together in the Hollywood adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s 2015 novel The Nightingale. Set in France during World War II, the story follows two sisters trying to survive under Nazi occupation. French polymath Mélanie Laurent, who collaborated with Elle on the 2018 film Galveston, has been tapped to direct.

“For years, we have looked for a film to do with one another and then this gem appeared,” Elle wrote in an Instagram post. “As sisters, to share our artistry with each other while bringing such a powerful sister story to life is a dream come true.”

Technically, this isn’t the first time the two have starred in the same film. Elle played a younger version of Dakota’s character in the 2001 drama I Am Sam, which launched the elder Fanning’s career, and they both lent their voices to the English dub of the Studio Ghibli classic My Neighbour Totoro in 2004.

Dakota has kept a relatively low profile recently, after years as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young actors (who can forget Uptown Girls, or, more importantly, her turn alongside Kristen Stewart in The Runaways?), but her recent performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood suggests a full return to the limelight is imminent. Meanwhile, Elle has gone from strength to strength since she was cast as Aurora in 2014’s Maleficent – cementing herself as both an indie darling and budding fashion icon thanks to longstanding relationships with Miu Miu and Rodarte.
