More than two years after the couple famously filed for divorce, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are officially single in the eyes of the law.

A judge ruled that the A-list duo have earned single status until they finalise their divorce settlement - a legal move known as bifurcation, People reports.

"Both parents are focused on what’s best for the kids," a source revealed.

Pitt and Jolie have six children together: Maddox, 17, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 12 and 10-year-old twins, Vivienne and Knox.

The estranged Hollywood couple first met while making the 2005 film Mr and Mrs Smith and made their relationship official in the summer of 2005, shortly after Pitt split from actress Jennifer Aniston.

Fast-forward to 2014 and the couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their private chateau in France before filing for divorce in September 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.

In May 2017, Pitt spoke candidly about their headline-gracing split in an interview with GQ.

"We're both doing our best. I heard one lawyer say, 'No one wins in court - it's just a matter of who gets hurt worse'," he said. "And it seems to be true, you spend a year just focused on building a case to prove your point and why you're right and why they're wrong, and it's just an investment in vitriolic hatred."

"I just refuse. And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It's just very, very jarring for the kids to suddenly have their family ripped apart."
