Yesterday Leonardo DiCaprio shared a shot of him and Brad Pitt on Instagram that is destined to become is already an iconic image in the style pantheon, shot on the set of Quentin Tarantino's next flick, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which centers around the infamous Manson Family murders of 1969. In the shot, Leo sports brown boot-cut pants (we're betting good money on a high polyester thread count), a worn leather belt and boots, a yellow turtleneck, and a soft orangey-brown leather blazer, topped off with a gold medallion and a chunky pinkie ring (yes, we see you). Pitt, meanwhile, is rocking double denim, aviators, a navy tee, and soft brown boots.

With their immaculately casual haircuts and steely gazes, Pitt and DiCaprio would be more than happy in 1969, but they look equally at home in 2018, when high-fashion menswear has increasingly been taking cues from earlier eras. Pitt’s worn and whiskered jeans evoke Demna Gvasalia’s S/S ’18 Balenciaga show, where almost offensively regular-looking pants were paired with oversize suit jackets and Neo glasses. Call it “real person drag.” Balenciaga’s F/W ’18 ready-to-wear, meanwhile, paid tribute to the turtleneck, styling it under blazers à la Leo. Patent leather has slipped from the forefront as worn leather has reappeared, either as an accent or a full-length, heavy leather duster, as in Raf Simons’s Calvin Klein F/W ’18 show. The recent show was a continuation of Simons’s obsession with glossying up the Midnight Cowboy aesthetic for a more expensive contemporary audience.

While Leo DiCaprio's and Brad Pitt’s outfits carry high-fashion cachet, they’re also eminently wearable. A turtleneck and pants under a casual jacket is a no-brainer (add the chain if you’re especially ballsy, or are a big fan of Donald Glover’s SNL episode). And DiCaprio’s palette is an inspiring vision for fall: We suddenly want everything yellow, orange, and brown that we can get our hands on. Pitt, whose jeans and jacket wouldn’t look out of place at Gucci, is sporting proportions that update the classic Canadian tuxedo for today. Either way, this one snap has gotten us very excited for what will no doubt be a fucked-up-in-a-good-way movie—and inspired to start shopping for fall.
