Chanel’s Classic Flap bag began its narrative in 1929. Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, Chanel’s founder, was an independent woman with an avant-garde mind. Whilst most women didn’t mind carrying around their bags as clutches, Coco sought release, wanting her hands free to do whatever she pleased. From that desire, the Classic Flap was born. The design was revisited in February of 1955, resulting in the iconic 2.55 moniker. In the ‘80s, its unmistakable interlocking CC turn-lock was inserted by then-creative director Karl Lagerfeld, replacing Coco’s original Mademoiselle lock. In the same decade, Lagerfeld also introduced the leather-and-chain straps. Throughout the years, this same model was reinvented, delivering the Classic Flap of today.
