Ben Stiller paid tribute to the late David Bowie at the premiere of Zoolander 2 in London last night.

The 50-year-old actor - who has reprised his role as Derek Zoolander in the long-awaited sequel - told reporters on the red carpet that he would have loved to have the 'Starman' singer in the follow-up.

"He was a huge influence on so many people, on our culture, in the last 40, 50 years - when you go back and look at how long he was making music and how ahead of the curve he always was and always taking chances," Stiller explained.

"So I think I'm like everyone else - influenced by him in that way.

"And it would have been great to have him in the second one, but having him in the first was a very special thing, and I will always cherish that."

In 2001's Zoolander, Bowie makes a memorable cameo appearance during which he plays adjudicator to Derek and Hansel's [Owen Wilson] ridiculous runway walk-off.

He ends up selecting Hansel as the winner after he wows the front row by removing his underwear without even taking off his leather trousers.

Zoolander 2 sees the return of Will Ferrell's evil fashionista Mugatu, Wilson's handsome Hansel, and Christine Taylor's bookish Matilda Jeffries.

Penelope Cruz and Kristin Wiig are new additions to the cast, while Benedict Cumberbatch, Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian West provide cameos.

At the premiere last night, Stiller also broke the world record for the longest ever selfie stick.

Zoolander 2 is out in select UK cinemas now, and opens across the UK and US on February 12.
