Wacom Creatives: Alberto Montt on storytelling through illustrations

“As human beings we have an enormous capacity of assigning stories; we feel stuffed with our stories, and I love that.”

Not only does he love stories, but cartoonist Alberto Montt passionately brings them to life through his illustrations.

For the Santiago de Chile-based creative, drawing has become an exercise in getting to know himself and in finding new ways to see the world. “I grew up with the humour of Gary Larson and Quino…Now I’m doing what I’ve long wanted, drawing the idiocy I have in my head.”

Montt has been drawing since the age of 2. Now, using his Wacom Intuos Pro, he has illustrated more than 40 children’s books and comic books and also regularly worked in advertising and marketing.

He recently released his latest publication Out of Service, a compilation of the best of his famous and classic vignettes. Known for his quirky take on pop culture, he says, “As human beings we have an enormous capacity of assigning stories; we feel stuffed with our stories, and I love that.”

His book touches on subjects ranging from economics, politics, religion, to love, relationships, existential doubts and global conspiracies.

His online Spanish comic-strip blog Dosis Diarias (Daily Dosis in English) has been up and running since 2006. In 2011, it was awarded as Best Blog in Spanish by broadcast network Deutshe Welle.

He has also published several illustrated books and in 2015, he launched a limited edition line of sneakers with the sports brand Puma.

He holds that because kids have powerful imaginations, they deserve powerful images.
