The 79 year old TV star died in hospital on Friday after surgery for a fall she had earlier in the week

The sad news was broken at the weekend that Ruth Madoc, 79, had died in hospital following a fall.

Brought up by her Welsh grandmother in Llansamlet, Swansea, she came to prominence playing Glady's Pugh in hit BBC sitcom Hi-de-hi! in the 1980s.

Her lead role in the holiday camp comedy became notable for her comical announcements on the camp's Tannoy, which started with playing her signature three notes on a mini xylophone.

The TV star was born in Norwich in 1943, but went live with her grandparents in Wales while her parents - who worked in healthcare - travelled around Britain for much of her childhood.

Following her training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Madoc's 50-year career spanned many roles in theatre and musicals, television and film.

Madoc's married first husband, the actor Philip Madoc, in the 1981. They had a son, Rhys, and a daughter, Lowri, and were married for twenty years, but divorced in 1981.

In 1982, she married, John Jackson, with whom she bought a home in Glynneath in 2002. They were married until his death in September 2021.

As well as her most famous role in Hi-de-hi! her more recent performances included Little Britain, where she played Daffyd Thomas's mother, and on stage with Calendar Girls.
