Critics Choice Awards choose Sarah Polley, James Cameron

Both are nominated for best director, among other trophies: Polley for Women Talking and Cameron for Avatar: The Way of Water.

Just days after netting Globe Globe nominations, Sarah Polley’s drama Women Talking and James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar: The Way of Water have racked up more accolodes, this time for the Critics Choice Awards.

Toronto-based Polley is nominated for adapted screenplay and directing trophies for her U.S. feature (Plan B Entertainment, Hear/Say Productions, Orion Pictures), which is based on the novel of the same name by Canadian author Miriam Toews.

The story of reckoning following years of sexual assaults in a Mennonite community is also up for Critics Choice trophies including best acting ensemble for a cast that has several Canadian leads, including Sheila McCarthy and Michelle McLeod. Women Talking is distributed by United Artists Releasing and Universal Pictures.

Kapuskasing, Ont.-born Cameron is in the running for best picture and best director for his performance-capture-filled feature, which was produced by his California-based Lightstorm Entertainment as well as TSG Entertainment. The fantasy adventure is a sequel to 2009’s Avatar and distributed by 20th Century Studios.

The film category nominees for the 28th annual Critics Choice Awards were announced on Wednesday (Dec. 14). The winners will be revealed at a Los Angeles broadcast gala on The CW on Jan. 15, 2023.

The Golden Globe Awards will be held in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Jan. 10, with Polley nominated for best screenplay for Women Talking and Cameron up for Best Director – Motion Picture and Best Picture – Drama for Avatar: The Way of Water.
