Exhaust Headers are one of the best performance upgrades that you can make. They improve Torque, Horsepower, and fuel economy.

Parts of a Header

Stock, cast iron manifolds are heavy and rust quickly. They also force exhaust gases into a single chamber. This creates backpressure in the exhaust, making it harder for the engine to breathe. Manifolds can also cause Exhaust Reversion.

Steel headers are lighter. The primary tubes give each cylinder its own exhaust chamber to reduce reversion. The pulses of exhaust gases in the primaries also create a Scavenging Effect in the cylinder. This improves airflow through the engine and can free up plenty of ponies!

Before buying a set of headers, it will help to understand the available options. Having a basic understanding will get you the right headers for your specific application.

Header Fitment

Most headers are designed to work with a specific engine/vehicle combination. If the headers don't fit, they won't do you any good.

Header Styles

There are several different types of headers. They are all designed with different uses in mind. They will also perform a little differently, depending on the style.

Header Material

Headers are often exposed to the elements. They also handle extreme temperatures. Most headers are made from mild steel or stainless steel. The material used to make the headers will affect how long they last.

Header Finish

The finish on the headers involves more than just the way they look. Different options will affect the way they handle heat and how long they last.

Header Flange

The header flange is what bolts to the cylinder head. A quality flange will prevent exhaust leaks without restricting the flow of exhaust gases.

Primary Tubes

The primaries make all the difference. Choosing the right size tubes will maintain the velocity of the exhaust gases leaving the cylinder. This improves The Scavenging Effect, which make the engine more efficient.

Collector

The collector is where it all comes together. There are 2 basic collector designs, 4-1 and Tri-Y. Each of these designs will perform a little differently.
