Barney sends first message since 2010 for 'Love Day' to remind you that he loves you even if nobody else does

It’s Valentine’s Day, and you know what that means: time to hear from everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur.

Following in the footsteps of Steve from Blue’s Clues and Elmo, Barney shared a video expressing his love for everybody, everywhere. “I haven’t seen some of you in a long time,” the purple dinosaur said. “But I always make sure to check in on my friends.”

In his “Love Day” message, Barney tells his “friends” to love themselves and each other. “We could all use a little reminder… of the superdy-duper ability we all have to love one another, and how important it is to show love toward yourself too.”

Barney also made sure to remind us all, “After a long day on the playground of life, I want you to know: you are seen. You are special. You are loved.” However, due to his use of the passive voice, it’s not immediately clear if he’s the one seeing us, or if he just assumes that others are doing the seeing. Barney’s own active involvement here is worth questioning, as he is both a fictional character and trapped behind a screen.

The video is aimed at adults, rather than Barney’s typical target audience of children, based on the tail end of his message, “Isn’t it nice how some things are still true even when you’re all grown up,” His final words, however, leave us on an ominous note: “I have a feeling I’ll be seeing you again soon.”

Perhaps Barney is referring to his plans to stomp into theaters in a new movie from Daniel Kaluuya, which Mattel Films exec Kevin McKeon described as “A24-type,” “surrealistic,” and “a play for adults.” Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz later clarified that “It will not be an odd movie,” but instead “fun, entertaining and culturally oriented.”
