Angelina Jolie filed divorce from husband Brad Pitt on Monday, surprising fans and social media. One of Pitt’s friends and regular costars, George Clooney, was also caught off guard by the news.

The actor attended a United Nations roundtable Tuesday to discuss the refugee crisis with President Barack Obama, among others. When a CNN reporter asked Clooney about Jolie and Pitt’s divorce, he had not yet been informed of the news.

“I didn’t know that. Wow. I feel very sorry then,” Clooney said. “That’s a sad story and unfortunate for a family. It’s an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that. It’s the first I’ve heard of it.”

Jolie divorced Pitt after two years of marriage; the couple began dating after costarring in 2005’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Pitt and Clooney first linked up on-screen for Ocean’s Eleven in 2001 and the subsequent sequels. They also starred in the Coen brothers’ dark comedy, Burn After Reading.
