Thank you Delaware County Daily Times for featuring our ground-breaking event with The Wawa Foundation. It may be standard and customary to host a ceremonial dirt turning when breaking ground on a new project. Instead, we chose to swing our sledgehammers to get the party started! The support from The Wawa, Inc. Foundation and the collaboration of the two organizations have been instrumental in seeing this project come to life. https://lnkd.in/e3CbnCiS

Are pubs a type of social infrastructure? 🍻 This question laid the foundation for my UNSW Bachelor of City Planning Undergraduate Thesis titled: Pubs as Community Hubs: An exploration into the extent in which pubs can fill a gap in the provision of community services in regional NSW. My research found that our current approach to social infrastructure and community service delivery is failing to support the needs of regional communities. Most notably, I found that 94% of regional NSW councils reported a lack in one or more community services in their community strategic plan. Yikes! And what do pubs have to do with this? Well, I would argue that pubs already function as an informal type of social infrastructure as they are often one of few places where regional communities come together to socialise and check in on one another. But I wanted to take this one step further by exploring a new model of community service provision where regional pubs could accommodate or deliver community services in the absence of traditional facilities. Like most research, I did not find a straightforward answer or solution but if you want to know more about my findings, please reach out! I’m also curious to know your thoughts, do you think pubs are a type of social infrastructure or could they become one? Many thanks to my supervisor Dr. C Steinmetz for her ongoing support and to all of my interviewees, your insights and expertise were incredibly valuable.

One of the best things about the MUP program at SJSU is that students work through class teams to complete real-world projects with community clients. Here's one recent example. https://lnkd.in/g3CRXab8
Director of Education at Mineta Transportation Institute and Professor of Urban & Regional Planning (SJSU)
Congratulations to the SJSU MUP students who just presented their Complete Street Vision for Santa Clara Street in downtown San Jose! This collaborative project brought together students from URBP 256 (local transportation planning) and URBP 295 (community engagement studio). The students' formal presentation at San Jose City Hall last week brought together a high-powered audience that included San Jose Vice Mayor (and MUP alum) Rosemary Kamei, San Jose Council-members Omar Torres and Pam Foley, Deputy City Managers Rosalynn Hughey and Rob Lloyd, and representatives the office of Mayor Matt Mahan. Rick Kos, AICP taught the community planning class, and I had the privilege of co-teaching the transportation class with Ramses Madou. #sjsu #sanjosecalifornia #transportationplanning #completestreets

EVIDENCE for OPTIMISM! yes this is certainly EVIDENCE! if your EYES ARE OPEN you have been seeing this concept being developed ! the future use and uses of Cleveland's' lake front has been debated often over many years;and now we see some results of the debating ! RESULTS that can only be seen AS EVIDENCE for OPTIMISM oh certainly there will be many pessimistic "experts" claiming this will never happen and they will do everything they can to dilute the optimism if only to prove themselves to be the "expert" pessimists they are! this leaves the door wide open for the OPTIMISTS to step in front of the "expert pessimists" to take the best of the opportunities that will follow the optimism! site selection committees are noticing Cleveland ! and the potential sites within this Master Plan will be absolutely world class phenomenal! nothing else anywhere in the world close to the amazing possibilities here and now! hold on to your hats! this entire region is poised for lift off! you can sit back and watch the show or jump in to take the opportunities! EITHER way KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN! these next few years will be exciting indeed! SUCCESS FAVORS the OPTIMIST! #siteselection #cleveland #optimism

Another city council win, which means a win for our community. It’s seemingly small, but I believe it will have a huge impact. Finally, we have a council retreat approved and planned. It, and more education for our government leaders, was one of the first things I advocated for on council. When I was sworn in, no one had done any training outside of the required state training for newly elected leaders. Some had not attended a training in 10 years. Continuing education is important, no matter the field, but I believe especially important when you are leading and representing people. We have a small budget, but we also increased our budget for council training significantly. We’re creating a culture where professional development and growth is valued. Our council has been pretty disjointed. There is seemingly more working against each other than working together for the people. My hope is this retreat will bring unity, help build trust, and give us an understanding of how, when we work together, we can accomplish great things. Where there is no vision, the people perish, and a lot of great things that could be will never be. But, we can’t just have a vision, we have to be able to put that vision into action, and, I believe the retreat will help us plan and execute better. I want to be someone who helps to bring economic growth and vibrancy to our town, and I believe this is a catalyst to that happening.
