RIP Pete Burns

burnsI usually do not blog about pop culture. I’m careful not to idolize people, because so many individuals with amazing talent sometimes engage in behavior that is unwholesome and I do not wish to defend that behavior. But in spite of their imperfections, I absolutely loved Whitney, Michael Jackson …. They were part of my youth and I forged memories while listening to their music, and am forever grateful for their legacy.

British pop star Pete Burns, lead singer of Dead or Alive, passed away on Sunday, and I’ve spent the last few days listening to his music and reminiscing. Unfortunately he was better known in recent years for having had over 300 facial surgeries, which had left him scarred and looking like a freak. Burns had been one of the first gender-bending icons in the 80s when gender-bending was still dangerous. He, together with Boy George, somehow managed to enjoy mainstream success thanks to their raw talent.

Dead or Alive originally gained an audience with You Spin Me Round, and later with Brand New Lover and Come Home With Me. Some of his best songs did not go mainstream (Then There Was You).

I will remember Burns for his talent and his willingness to break the mold and be original and creative, in his life as in his music. Let this blog be my homage to his legacy.
