A suspected pedophile who was accused of fatally poisoning and trying to rape a 9-year-old girl was found unresponsive in a Colorado jail cell and then died at a hospital Monday, just nine days after he was arrested on a slew of felony charges.
Jeffrey Beagley, 34, was taken into custody on Dec. 14 after a weeks-long investigation found he exposed the child to a fatal dose of chloroform that was delivered to his house a day before her death, authorities said.
The Grand Junction resident, who was being held without bond at the Mesa County Jail, was found unconscious Monday before he was pronounced dead, local officials confirmed Tuesday. An official cause of death is pending toxicology results.
The victim, whose relationship to the suspect has not been released, was found dead on the morning of Nov. 9 in a home she shared with her mother, sister and Beagley, police said in a news release.
An arrest affidavit that was unsealed last week suggests the girl went through a horrific ordeal before being murdered.
Authorities said they found a makeshift tent that was set up inside a shed in the back of the property for “privacy and seclusion.” Inside the tent, officers found blankets with drops of blood in them, pillows, space heaters, a laptop, a video camera and an empty chloroform bottle, NBC affiliate station KKCO reported.
Police said rapists sometimes use chloroform to knock out a victim and sexually assault them while they’re unconscious.
Besides the tent and numerous “macabre” items that were found at the home, a search of Beagley’s laptop turned up more than 1,100 pictures and 73 videos of child porn, some of which depicted the victim, according to the affidavit.
The suspect had not entered a plea to the charges, which included first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, reckless manslaughter, attempted sex assault on a child, sexual exploitation of a child and invasion of privacy for sexual gratification.
The investigation into his death is ongoing.
