Former Argentine tennis player Juan Martin del Potro, who retired from the courts in February 2022, wants to have his 'Last Dance' in 2023 by returning from retirement to compete at the 2023 US Open.
The Argentine spoke to The West Australian, where he made clear his intentions to return to the court.
"I'm determined to do everything possible to play one last official match at the US Open 2023," he stated
The condition of his knee will decide whether he can return
Despite his desire to be in the fourth Grand Slam of the season in the ATP via invitation, the 34-year-old knows that it will not be easy because of the state of his knee.
"I do not know if my knee will allow me to be at 100 percent or not, but I have made clear my desire that the last match of my professional career is this year and, in that case, it has to be in Flushing Meadows," he added.
Del Potro stays in shape
On the other hand, he said he is training and has been playing lately.
"I love to compete and I want to do it one more time. I'm playing a lot of tennis, but it's hard for me because when I hit hard I tend to lose the point. I'm going to work hard to get ready and then we'll see what happens".
US Open would welcome the veteran's return
Stacey Allaster, tournament director, reacted positively to Juan Martin's intention to be in New York this year.
"He's a tremendous but friendly competitor and we'd be delighted to have this former US Open champion join us at this year's tournament," Allaster's statement read.
Romance with The Big Apple
Juan Martin del Potro is looking for his 'Last Dance' in the place where he won the most important title of his career as a professional within the ATP.
In 2009, he won the US Open after beating Swiss Roger Federer in the final in five sets.
ATP career achievements
In 17 years on the men's circuit, he won 22 titles in 35 ATP finals. Highlights include the Basel Tournament 2012, the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis 2018 and Indian Wells 2018.
He also won the bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games and the silver medal at Rio de Janeiro 2016.
