What Does "WTF" Mean at Your Company?

Anyone with experience running a business will tell you that giving feedback to staff can be uncomfortable, and finding ways to do it without playing the “blame game” or damaging employees’ confidence is challenging.

Twenty-six years and three companies later, I’ve found that allowing an employee to control the conversation about their work is the best way to get honest, informative answers.

“How do you feel about your job?” is an open-ended question that puts the ball in their court. Actively listening to their response gives me a chance to help find relevant solutions that enables them to reach their goals.

During a recent conversation with writer Michael Simmons, I mentioned that my teams actually look forward to getting feedback.

I attribute that to the culture I’ve grown, where failing isn’t frowned upon. This “willing to fail” (WTF) policy gives employees permission to take risks that differentiate our company in a competitive marketplace.

A “WTF” culture also ensures that feedback is provided with a constructive spirit that ensures employees feel validated in their role.

"Who's That For?" Always focus on the customer and target audience/market. What do they want? Are we fulfilling it? Do we have our eye on what's important? Or are we just creating something that we think is cool? :)
