Pinoy boxer Vincent Astrolabio upsets Rigondeaux to win WBC international bantamweight title

Unheralded Filipino boxer Vincent Astrolabio spoiled Guillermo Rigondeaux’s comeback party following a unanimous decision upset to win the vacant WBC international bantamweight title this Sunday at the Dubai Marina.

Rigondeaux, coming off a split decision loss against WBO world bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero last August, was made to look every bit of his 41 years by Astrolabio.

Astrolabio stayed in the pocket, throwing and landing his right hand throughout the fight which happens to be the same punch that dropped the Cuban Olympian in the eighth round.

As usual, Rigondeaux rode his bike but none of it mattered as the Filipino managed to cut the ring and land more punches.

After ten rounds of action, all three judges saw the fight 95-94 in favor of Astrolabio, improving his record to 17-3 with 12 knockouts while Rigondeaux dropped to 20-3 with 13 knockouts.
