She is proud of her Mexican roots, and one of her beauty idols was Selena Quintanilla, the so-called “Queen of Tejano” whose star was rising when she was killed in 1995 by the founder of her fan club.
It’s not often that Fergie, lead singer of the rock/hip hop group Black Eyed Peas, speaks about her Mexican roots. In past media interviews, she has said she is an ethnic mishmash, and does not identify primarily with any one of her ancestral cultures.
In Glamour magazine’s Belleza Latina edition, Fergie, who was born Stacy Ann Ferguson, said: “I’m very proud to be part Mexican. I’m one of a growing number of Hispanics in America, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it. This is becoming the norm, and it’s the beauty of our melting pot.”
Fergie’s great-grandmother on her father’s side was born in Guanajuato, in central Mexico.
In a 2008 interview with Latina magazine, Fergie quipped about her Mexican roots: “I’m very proud of it; that’s probably where I get my fire!”
She added: “I’m mostly Scottish-Irish, though.”
When asked in her Glamour interview: “Have your beauty choices ever been influenced by your Latin roots,” Fergie said she admired Selena.
“Absolutely,” she responded. “One of my beauty idols was Selena [Quintanilla], who had the most beautiful lips. I overline my lips a bit—I completely admit it. I really like the look.”
But Fergie, 40, does not see herself as a Latina role model.
“I don’t go around claiming it big time,” the singer said in her interview with Latina, “because there are many more full-bred Latinas that are out there to represent.”
