Maserati Unveils Its New Supercar, The MC20

Maserati rolled out its first supercar in 15 years. Developed by the Maserati Innovation Lab over the past two years, the MC20 evolved from the famed MC12, which ceased production in 2010, and signals the venerable Italian automaker’s return to racing.

"We are setting the cornerstone for building the future of Maserati,” said Davide Grasso, Maserati’s COO, during an event revealing the new model in Modena, Italy. “The MC20 is the embodiment of our values, the first of its kind 100% made in Modena. MC20 is the model that starts our new era."

The long-awaited MC20 features the first engine built in-house by Maserati in more than two decades. The Nettuno (or Neptune) is a 3-liter, twin-turbo V6 with an F1-inspired pre-combustion chamber and a dual-spark plug configuration. It produces 621 horsepower, can go from 0 to 60 mph in a bracing 2.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 202 mph.

Built around a lightweight carbon fiber monocoque tub (weighing around 3,330 pounds), the MC20 was shown in a coupé, but will also be available in a cabriolet and an electric model. The butterfly doors (with recessed handles) are not only more ergonomic but also allow easier access to the cockpit.

The MC20 has sleek lines and no mobile appendages. The front features a wide mesh grille (which shows off the oversized trident badge) and angular LED headlights built into the front fenders to increase aerodynamics.

From the rear, the MC20 has wide hips with a dual exhaust system above a large diffuser. There is also a modest spoiler to improve downforce, LED taillights and a rear window featuring the trident motif.

Inside the MC20 cabin, the focus is on the driver. The car has two 10-inch screens—one for the cockpit and another for the multimedia functions, which includes a Sonus Faber sound system—and the console has been simplified with minimal buttons and distractions. There are four driving modes (Wet, GT, Sport and Corsa) as well as a fifth ESC off mode. The steering wheel is also made from carbon fiber and of course the signature Maserati pedal system puts the world at your feet.

The MC20 will be available for pre-order on September 10 and is expected to go into production by the end of this year. However, the car isn’t expected to be released in the United States until the Fall 2021.
