Directed by James Wan, Jason Momoa returns as Arthur Curry (aka Aquaman) alongside Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman. In the film, Black Manta is fueled by his desire to avenge his father’s death. Determined to succeed this time, he will spare no effort in bringing Aquaman to justice. Now more powerful than ever, Black Manta wields the Black Trident and is ready to unleash a sinister force upon his nemesis.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom earned just $28 million in its opening weekend, about $9 million less than projected ticket sales, and received poor reviews across the board. For example, Rolling Stone critic David Fear called the “Aquaman” sequel a “failure no matter how you judge it,” stating it is a “tonal mess, dogged by VFX that range from ‘video-game cut scene’ to ‘last-minute rush job,’ complicated yet curiously thin storytelling.” The film also has a 35% Rotten Tomatoes score from verified film critics — so you get the picture.
DC has been struggling to make an impact at the box office, and many experts have attributed the cause to “superhero fatigue” (an issue plaguing DC and the MCU). Nevertheless, DC studios — led by James Gunn and Peter Safran — plan to reboot the DC franchise in 2005 with Superman: Legacy. Variety reported that none of the DCEU Justice League actors, including Momoa, will reprise their roles in the new universe.
