Hewitt rolls back years to make second round

Lleyton Hewitt (Australia) beat James Duckworth (Australia) 7-6(5) 6-2 6-4 - Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt got the final tournament of his career off to a fine start as he beat James Duckworth in straight sets in his opening match of the Australian Open. The 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon champion, who turns 35 next month and is outside the world's top 300, was pushed hard in the opening set but thereafter always looked in charge against his 129th-ranked opponent. Hewitt is making a 20th and final appearance in a tournament where he has only once been past the quarter-finals - that was back in 2005, when he lost in the final to Marat Safin.

Wawrinka benefits from Tursunov retirement

4-Stanislas Wawrinka (Switzerland) beat Dmitry Tursunov (Russia) 7-6(2) 6-3 0-0 (Tursunov retired) - 2014 Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka proceeded into the second round as Russian opponent Dmitry Tursunov retired through injury after two sets of the match. Tursunov, playing his first grand slam main draw match since the 2014 US Open after battling a succession of foot injuries, had an opportunity to snatch the first set before the Swiss forced a tiebreak, that he won easily 7-2. The 2014 Melbourne Park champion then pulled away to a 3-0 lead in the second set before Tursunov sought treatment on his painful hip and when the fourth-seeded Wawrinka sealed the second set, the Russian retired.

Istomin claimed the opening set in a tie-break, only for Tomic to square the game in the next and then show astonishing reserves of nerve as he saved eight break points en-route to claiming the third set and a further two in the final set. In each of those last three sets a couple of key points were decisive - and Tomic will be thrilled to have held his nerve to beat a tricky first-round opponent.

Kerber forced to dig deep by Doi

7-Angelique Kerber (Germany) beat Misaki Doi (Japan) 6-7(4) 7-6(6) 6-3 - Germany's Angelique Kerber was pushed all the way by the Japanese world number 64 before making it into the second round. The players matched each other almost shot for shot in the opening set, but Kerber began to create more chances in the second - only for Doi to save six break points and force a tiebreak. Kerber won that and then took an equally-close decider, saving four break points herself as she shrugged off some poor serving to come through.

Rafa Nadal's woes continue

Fernando Verdasco (Spain) beat 5-Rafa Nadal (Spain) 7-6(6) 4-6 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2 - Rafael Nadal lost in the opening round of a Grand Slam tournament for only the second time in his career as he fell to Davis Cup team-mate Fernando Verdasco.
