Council member Ray Martinez will not seek re-election to his east-central Fort Collins City Council seat.

Martinez spent 10 years on City Council, first as mayor from 1999 to 2006 and then as the District 2 City Council member. At Tuesday night's meeting, he said he wanted to give others the opportunity to serve and also to pursue his own goals. Three people have declared for his seat so far: Adam Eggleston, Susan Holmes and Julie Pignataro.

Martinez did not endorse any of the three in case someone else declares for the seat for the April 2 election.

"I think it's been a great council to work with. This has really been enjoyable. We've got a lot of work done, accomplished a lot," Martinez said in an interview. "... I can't stay forever. The only reason I ran the last time there wasn't really anyone running except (Nancy Tellez). I think everybody deserves to have competition."

Martinez didn't rule out running for another elected office, but his immediate plans hedge closer to work as a consultant, occasionally in government affairs, organizing retreats and speaking engagements.
