What is F1 Racing? One of the most popular and adrenaline-fueled sports around the world, Formula 1 racing, or F1 racing, is the elite class of international auto racing that has been keeping sports car fans from San Antonio and beyond glued to their seats for decades. Originally called the World Drivers’ Championship, F1 Racing was sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile in 1981 for open-wheel single seater racing cars. F1 races are called Grand Prix, with 22 Grand Prix races that occur on average each year. Multiple manufacturers are involved in F1, such as Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Red Bull, and more recently — Aston Martin, who has rejoined after being absent for 61 years, shaking up the world of automobile racing. To learn more about the history of Aston Martin in F1, continue to read on with Aston Martin Houston.

A Brief Overview on the History of Aston Martin & F1 Racing

Back in 1959, Aston Martin made its debut in Formula 1 with its first-ever open-wheel racing car, the DBR4. The DBR4 performed poorly on multiple occasions due to being outdated in comparison to competitors. In 1960, the DBR5 was built and was a lighter replica of its predecessor with a heavy engine in the front, but still struggled to perform well in multiple Grand Prix. Aston Martin left F1 after the conclusion of the 1960 season.

Decades later in 2021, Aston Martin has since made a comeback to F1 racing with the formation of the Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ team led by Lawrence Stroll. While the team has gotten off to a bit of rough start with only placing 7th overall in 2021, hopes still remain high for the future of the F1 Aston Martin team.
