Not quite as good at the original board game Tigris and Euphrates, but a bit simpler. One weird rule is not being allowed to peek at your pile of points, which we have opted to change so that you can peek. Otherwise the winner is almost random. Better with 3 or more players than with 2.

I've tried several other Reiner Knizia games (such as Lost Cities) and really enjoyed them. I started out looking for the board game "Tigris & Euphrates" because I read on a website that it was considered Knizia's masterpiece, and then wound up getting this card game "Euphrates & Tigris" instead because it was the only version available ("Euphrates % Tigris" is a 'simplified' version of the board game that has slightly less complex rules but still uses tokens and cards). I was not disappointed!
The learning curve was steep - I can't say I fully understood what was going on the first time I played! - but once I grasped the strategy I was completely hooked. Gameplay is focused on gathering "points" in four areas (trader, farmer, priest, and king), which you earn by laying the appropriately colored tiles next to your "leaders" (e.g. your trader, farmer, priest, and king) in each area and/or by defeating your opponents' "leaders". To further spice up the game, there are also ten locations with "treasures" on them, and if you obtain a treasure, it serves as a "wild point" (e.g. can be added to your final score in any of the four areas). The game forces you to develop all four areas equally because your final score is actually your point total from the WEAKEST of your four development areas (e.g. the area in which you scored the least points!). The game supports 2-4 players, but is probably best played with 3-4 players.
If you like games that require strategic thinking, I highly recommend this one. If you're still deciding whether to purchase this, there is a website that lets you play the game online against AI opponents for free - not as satisfying as having the board game and playing against your friends, but a great way to try the game before purchasing it, and also to learn the rules the first time around!
