Pierre Bonnard, after studying the honorable legal profession that his family desired, followed his heart and turned to art full time.
He was one of the founding members of Les Nabis (“The Prophets” in Hebrew), formed by a diverse group of young art students who were inspired by Paul Gauguin and Paul Cézanne. They are known today for their bold use of color. Bonnard then became interested in Japanese woodblock prints and earned the nickname from his friends as “Le Nabis le trés japonard” (the most Japanese of the Nabis). His work would expand into urban scenes, Art Nouveau, and especially paintings of his future wife, Marthe de Méligny. These exquisite paintings often showed her bathing, and while she aged, she is always young in his work.
