Andrew's Danger UXB Austin Tilly (Tamiya 1/48) *Finished*

Post by AndrewR »

I've decided to build the Tamiya 1/48 Austin Tilly as a vehicle from the Bomb Disposal Service (as featured in the TV series Danger UXB).

Image

Tamiya are a bit evasive on the actual vehicle, but it's an Austin. The "Tilly" utility family included vehicles built on saloon car chassis from several manufacturers.

Image

Complete bodyshell, and a transparent sprue which includes the canvas tilt.

Image

One sprue of nicely detailed parts.

Image

I won't be spending time superdetailing this kit!

Nice choice - it's a lovely little kit!

Don't forget to add a Luftwaffe 500kg bomb in the flat bed...! :-D

I'm not sure the springs are up to a 500 kg load tbh... :-D

I suppose I could build the 1/48 Mossie that it came with, as a backdrop!

The chassis goes together very quickly. I've also spent some time cleaning up seams on the wheels.

I've also put the head on the driver, Private Norightofway.

A splash of paint on. I used Vallejo Israeli Sand Brown Primer, then brushed on some AK Real Colour paints.

I'm using Khaki Green G3 as the bodywork colour, and S.C.C. 2 for the canvas. I also put a sepia wash on the canvas, to give it some depth.

And Judy Geeson. :)

It's a very nice kit. I've been looking for some interior shots, but all I've found is an amazing restoration job here:

https://hmvf.co.uk/topic/9338-austin-10 ... tillyquot/

I've painted the front seats saddle brown, and the rear ones (canvas) a sand colour. I might change this to duck-egg green though.

Image

Most of the other interior bits have been painted too. I put an umber wash on the canvas coverings to try and make it look better.

Image

I've also sprayed the mudguards red. They'll need a second coat.

Equally importantly, we'll need 1/35 scale John Mills and Sylvia Sims figures for the new Airfix K2/Y ambulance!

Red for Danger!

The main colour on the Tilly remains to be painted.

Cheers Paul.

I've brushed a coat of Khaki Green No. 3 on the bodywork. AK True Color is a lacquer based paint, intended for spraying, but it brushes very nicely out of the tin.

Image

I wanted the red to look quite dull and faded, as the vehicle appears in the TV series. The easiest way to do that with Vallejo Air Red is to use a darkish primer (hence the brown). For a brighter red, use either sand or white depending on the shade you want.

I glued the seats in place, and the wheels are just push-fitted in the axles (and fit perfectly, no glue needed).

Image

Curiosity got the better of me, and I dropped the bodyshell on the chassis. Perfect fit again (and it comes off again).

Image

Looking at stills from Danger: UXB, it seems that the canvas is dark green rather than brown, so there will be a bit of repainting needed.
