Buenos Aires and the Federal Capital in particular is a strategic point of passage for many people who come to Argentina for business or tourism and decide to spend time bird watching, it is common in many of the large cities that they have a public park or green sector for recreation…. But in the case of Buenos Aires, the city goes one step further. Buenos Aires has its own ecological reserve!

If you got here reading you are sure to be surprised, but it is real, the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve or RECS as we like to call it is a huge reserve that is located very close to Puerto Madero between the Rio de la Plata and the administrative / commercial portion more. important city.

Many times we are asked, What is the best place to birding in Buenos Aires? And the answer is always the same 🙂

So that we take dimension on what we are talking about, we are going to see some images that show the fabulous contrast between city and nature that this place offers with wonderful views.

Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve

The Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve has two entrances, the first one from the southern part of the city on Brasil Street where we can also see, for example, the large fountain "Lola Mora" and the other entrance from the north of the city, more precisely from the Viamonte street, open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (The schedule may change due to the situation of the pandemic) and is closed on rainy or windy days.

The birds in the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve are for us the stars of the place of course, in the area that has about 350 hectares we can find different environments represented, such as three lagoons (one that borders its entire front and is the largest of the area) pastures, ceibales, alder mountains, open areas and of course the entire coast of the Rio de la Plata.

We have more than 300 species of birds registered in the area, with some very outstanding records ... The reserve is an essential meeting point for bird watchers who reside near the federal capital and it is common to find several people on Saturdays and Sundays. observing birds or groups taking nature photography.

Access to the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve is free and of course we recommend to achieve the greatest number of birds and enrich the outing that you have a guide from our team to accompany you and be able to identify the species that you are observing.

Getting to the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve is really simple since it is in the center of the City and has wide connectivity with all points of it, you can get there by Taxy or private car (there is a large parking lot) or by subway or bus.

Cares inside the reserve:

The ecological reserver is quite safe and has a team of professionals who permanently visit the place, in any case being a place open to the public it is necessary to have the pertinent precautions of the case and to be attentive at all times.

Some dangerous snakes such as the Yarara Grande also reside in the place, so you have to be attentive and when you encounter any of these snakes, do not disturb it and simply admire its beauty.

What species can I observe within the Reserve:

The list is quite extensive, in a day of touring with a guide you can easily observe between 60 and 90 species, there are some more difficult to observe than others but our favorites in the area are the Southern Screamer, Black Becard, the Guira Cucko and of course the beautiful Red Crested Cardinal.
