What did Alexi Lalas say about the United States national team's World Cup performance?

The United States national team drew 1-1 with Wales on Monday afternoon in the World Cup opener for both nations. It was a disappointing result for the United States, as they opened the tournament with a strong first half that was near dominant.

Former United States national team defender Alexi Lalas weighed in on the result and what it means for the group’s chances to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Lalas, a former college standout at Rutgers, attended the 1990 World Cup in Italy as a fan. He was a part of two World Cup rosters for the United States in 1994 and 1998. The central defender parlayed an outstanding 1994 World Cup into a deal with Padova, making him the first American to play in Serie A.

Now a commentator with FoxSports, Lalas said on the ‘State of the Union’ podcast that he was frustrated at the United States’ inability to get a win against Wales.

Alexi Lalas on the United States national team's World Cup opener

“There was a sense of loss in that this US team left something on the table. And it’s a little frustrating, you know, I want to be positive – you know me I’m a positive type of guy.

“And I want to be positive. However, this was a game and I think three points that was gifted to the US and instead of being ruthless and taking that gift and putting it in the pocket and not letting anybody take it away from you, they basically had a tale of two halves. That second half – the adjustments that were made by both sides or the non-adjustments when it comes to the US. It impacted the points, bigger points in the first game, and there certainly is a pathway out and I can certainly look at a glass-half-full scenario, but ultimately, I think a lot of fans are gonna look at this game and say that it’s the one that got away.”

“A couple of things come out of this game. I thought the referee had a nightmare – both sides. I just don’t think that he had a particularly good game. I do think that it ultimately affected the game. Christian Pulisic at times was active and didn’t have a horrible game, although I will say that his free kicks and set pieces were not good and lacked consistency and this is not necessarily anything new. It’s frustrating because the amount of corner kicks and set pieces the US did have, especially in that first half, that there was even a momentary opportunity to capitalize on it. So that was disappointing.”

Alexi Lalas on the play of Walker Zimmerman in the second half

“Walker Zimmerman, you can’t do that. You can’t do that in a normal game. You certainly can’t do it in a World Cup. It’s again – you are giving the other team an opportunity. Let them earn it and they did not earn that.”

Alexi Lalas on Wales making second half adjustments in their World Cup opener

“I will say this. When it comes to adjustments, we judge coaches on their ability within the game and the limited opportunities they have in terms of substitutions and at halftime making adjustments.

“We heard Tyler Adams after the game talk about how they had a game plan and they followed it and they were very proud of  the work and the result of following that plan. Well, maybe in the first half they did. And they had all sorts of possession, but they had to have known going in and going in and it isn’t the worst thing in the world. Yes, you want to score a bunch of goals and you did have an opportunity but that’ll happen sometimes.

“But you have to be prepared that the opposition – in this case Wales – is going to make adjustments and they are going to come with something different in that second half if they don’t break, but you have to assume this is the World Cup. This is a team that qualified for the World Cup. They are going to make adjustments and they did.

“And unfortunately the US either didn’t really recognize that that was happening or didn’t have the capacity to adjust and certainly waited, waited too long.”

Alexi Lalas on United States national team attacker Gio Reyna a not starting or playing

“Gia Reyna… I have no idea where Gio Reyna was we were not informed as to if there was an injury going forward. But it boggles the mind that at some point, and hopefully – I would have preferred it much earlier – he was not put on the field and ended up not even stepping on the field. So there’s something going on there. And I think a lot of people are scratching their heads.”
