new boxed window interpretation makes a strong statement

Bay windows are not a new thing. Nor are window seats. A trend we’re seeing emerge, largely from Australian design where it’s called a “boxed window”, is an inverted box window. In other words, rather than protruding outwards, they extend into the room.

While these inverted window boxes create a very pronounced window and window ledge or seat, keep in mind that they also impact the way light enters the room.

The deeper the protruding interior frame, the greater the degree of shadowing and more filtered natural daylighting.

For small spaces, this may be a boon or a hindrance, pending the room’s layout. No, not just in terms of sunlight, but also accessible floor space.

What if you like the look but can’t afford to forfeit the interior space?

One option is to keep the unit more shallow, perhaps extending it down to the floor to help disguise radiator heating. Just be sure to factor air ventilation into the design.

This angled variation creates a cosy seat but allows much more natural light to illuminate the room.

Incorporating the boxed window with built-ins merges form with function, making great use of the space with the creation of some extra storage. The window architecture is less front and centre with the inclusion of the fuller build-out, but it may serve better in the long run, especially if storage is a concern.
