About
Gay Test Drawings, also known simply as Gay Test, are a series of crudely made drawings of album covers, celebrities and memes (among other identifiable pop culture imagery) that if the viewer recognizes, it means that they're gay or part of the LGBTQ+ community. The trend became prominent on Twitter in June 2023, inspired by precursor tweets about a similar Autism test and Autism Test Pattern Recognition Parodies. Gay Test Drawings are not to be confused with the precursor Gay Test Demotivational Posters from the 2000s.
Origin
On May 30th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @CradleTheBalls_ tweeted a so-called "Autism Test," asking their viewers to guess what the three, colored balls meant, gaining roughly 5,900 likes in eight days (shown below, left). The tweet led to more viral quote retweets following the same format, such as one from Twitter[2] user @arakicore on June 2nd, that received over 46,100 likes in six days.
A day prior, on June 1st, 2023, Twitter[3] user @lilyxiuxiu tweeted a parody of the Autism test called "this is a gay test," showing two squiggly lines (one blue, one orange) on a black background, gaining roughly 2,700 likes in one week (shown below, right). The image was made to resemble a then-recent photo of Taylor Swift and Ice Spice on a stage.[4]
Spread
Following Twitter[3] user @lilyxiuxiu's tweet, others on the platform started to post their own gay tests using their own crudely made MS Paint-looking drawings. For instance, later on June 1st, 2023, Twitter[5] user @gagadaily tweeted a pixelated Lady Gaga album cover, gaining roughly 4,700 likes in one week (shown below, left). On June 3rd, Twitter[6] user @kulonbiano tweeted a poorly done version of the last.fm logo, gaining over 1,000 likes in five days (shown below, right).
Going into June 2023, more Gay Test Drawings surfaced on Twitter,[7][8] coinciding with Pride Month. The tweets were also screenshotted and reposted elsewhere, going viral on Instagram, [9] among other platforms.
