Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a 1968 reconstruction of the Ortega House, home to armorer Nicolas de Ortega during the First Spanish Period, whom died in 1762. The house then passed into the possession of Jesse Fish, whom sold it to John Proctor in 1769. Upon Proctor’s death in 1777, the house was sold to carpenter James Scotland. During the British period, under the ownership of Proctor and Scotland, the house was expanded with the addition of a kitchen and loggia. At the start of the Second Spanish Period in 1783, Scotland left St. Augustine, and the house was given to William Slater. Sebastian Ortega, of Minorcan descent, bought the house in 1791, making major alterations to the structure, including replacing the roof, replastering the walls, and adding a new tabby floor. By 1815, when the house was purchased by Miguel Andreu, the house was noted as being in poor condition. It remained in the possession of the Andreu family until the 1830s. The house was later demolished as the street commercialized. The house was reconstructed as part of an effort to restore the colonial appearance of the city by the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, which reconstructed several other houses and structures from the colonial period during the 1960s and 1970s.
