c.1900 Canda Auto-Quadricycle

Sold for $56,000 on 4/7/21comments-icon39Comments
c.1900 Canda Auto-Quadricycle

This Canda Auto-Quadricycle was manufactured by the Canda Manufacturing Company of Carteret, New Jersey, between 1900 to 1902. It was refurbished during previous ownership and was acquired by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation from the Museum of Science and Industry of Chicago, Illinois, in December 1957. The vehicle was displayed at Tony Hulman’s Early Wheels Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana, until the 1980s and was subsequently incorporated into the IMS Museum collection, where it spent the past decade in its climate-controlled storage facility. Power comes from a De Dion-Bouton Type E single-cylinder engine that is geared to the rear axle, and the quadricycle is finished in blue with white pinstriping and features a leather bicycle-seat for the driver and a forward passenger seat trimmed in tan cloth. The vehicle was returned to running condition by the IMS Museum staff in preparation for the sale, although further sorting is required prior to regular use. This Auto-Quadricycle is now offered by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation in Indiana with a bill of sale.

c.1900 Canda Auto-Quadricycle

This forecar features tubular steel bodywork and a wood bench that were refinished in blue with white pinstriping prior to the museum’s 1957 acquisition. Cracks in the wood bodywork are noted along with rust where there are paint chips on the frame.

Body-color wire wheels are mounted with Vee Rubber bias-ply tires. The fuel tank is mounted behind the driver’s seat, and braking is from a single band brake on the rear axle. Bicycle pedals are provided for the driver, and the throttle is controlled via a lever mounted on the top tube of the frame.

A leather-covered bicycle seat with springs is fitted for the driver, while a bench trimmed in tan tufted cloth is mounted up front. Tan carpet lines the floorboards.

c.1900 Canda Auto-Quadricycle

The De Dion Bouton Type E single-cylinder engine is geared to the rear axle and was rated at 1¾ horsepower by Canda when new. The engine was returned to running condition by the IMS Museum staff, although further sorting may be required.
