Shipping container structures have gained immense popularity in recent times and architecture firms globally have designed some amazing multi-storey buildings by stacking containers.
Tel Aviv-based Potash Architects repurposed seven shipping containers and transformed them into an office building accommodating office spaces, recreational areas and technical facilities. Named Shipping Container Terminal, the building is located at the Port of Ashdod cargo area which is about 40 kilometers south of Tel Aviv.
The architects chose shipping containers for the construction because they wanted the building to reflect its industrial seafront location.
“It also made a lot of sense from a sustainable standpoint because in this particular project, used shipping containers were an abundant resource.”
But, what really differentiates this structure from the rest is the innovative way of positioning one of the containers at a 30 degree angle housing a scissor staircase. Three of its steel walls were replaced with glazing, while additional structural supports were added at the two main stress points to hold it firmly in place.
“The inspiration was drawn by the way containers are stacked across the facility,” explained project architect Sivan Joseph. “We wanted to extend that narrative and add some playfulness to differentiate it from its surroundings and accentuate the recreational function of the building.”
