The area: Advertising

Users come first at Google. Nowhere is this more important than on our Advertising team: we firmly believe that ads can provide useful information if, and only if, they are relevant to what our users wish to find. Hundreds of thousands of advertisers worldwide use AdWords to promote their products; hundreds of thousands of publishers take advantage of our AdSense program to deliver ads relevant to their site content. We build and maintain the platforms that have made Google what it is today, and are constantly innovating to deliver the most effective advertising opportunities of tomorrow.

The role: Engineering Productivity Manager - Mountain View or Los Angeles

Like Google's own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer (SWE) goes way beyond just Search. SWE Managers have not only the technical chops to roll up their sleeves and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a SWE Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. SWE teams work all across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. Operating with scale and speed, our world-class software engineers are just getting started -- and as a manager, you guide the way.

Responsibilities:

  • Create the next generation of testing frameworks, monitoring tools, release techniques, and infrastructure to increase the speed of release cycles and allow for constant high quality product and feature delivery.
  • Build and manage a engineering productivity team to meet the needs of products under development.
  • Foster collaboration between different teams for successful releases.
  • Mentor junior members of the team in software development, testing methodology and release support.

Minimum qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or closely related degree. In lieu of degree, 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • 3 years of hands-on technical leadership and people management experience.
  • Hands on programming capabilities in C++, Java, C, and/or Python.
  • Experience in building test automation frameworks and tools within a large scale enterprise environment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science or closely related degree.
  • 8 years of relevant industry experience, with 4 years of hands-on technical leadership and people management experience (managing teams of 8+ developers).
  • Experience managing in an agile/test-driven development environment and dealing with code refactoring, extreme programming and code bottleneck issues.
  • Strong distributed systems and architecture knowledge and experience.
  • Experience shipping successful products.
  • Strong leader capable of motivating and energizing the very best software engineers, as well as gaining their respect.
